BACKHAUS, FREDERICK H. (FRED), 83, of Ramsey, died peacefully on Friday, February 5, 2021. Beloved husband of 63 years to Joyce A. (nee Kopf). Loving father of Frederick & his wife Kathy, Alice & her husband Michael Vietri, Jennifer & her husband Justin Massaro, and Jeffrey & his wife Carla. Devoted brother of Nancy & the late Lawrence (2019) Pool. Cherished grandfather of Kristin, Deanna, Monica, Ryan, Fred, Kyle, Samantha, Mackenzie, and Morgan.
Fred had a lifelong career in the telecommunications industry beginning as a lineman for New Jersey Bell Telephone and retiring as a Supervisor for Verizon. He was a US Navy Veteran and served from 1956-1963 as a Navy Seabee where he learned his various trade skills building Naval Bases. Fred was a faithful and longstanding member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Ramsey where he served two terms as chairperson for the Property and Grounds Committee. Fred was also active in the Ramsey Recreation Department serving as the President of the Baseball Association in the mid 1970’s, as well as coaching all of his children’s baseball and softball teams. He enjoyed bowling and was involved in various leagues over the years. Fred was a skilled craftsman who spent countless hours on woodworking projects as well as refinishing and reupholstering furniture. He utilized those woodworking skills by volunteering for the Ramsey DACKKs Group for Supportive Housing Development and Habitat for Humanity. Fred had a passion for boating which began as a teenager when he built a small boat with a neighbor to use on the Hackensack River. He passed on that love for boating to his family who enjoyed summer vacations on Lake George waterskiing, tubing and cruising around the northern end of the lake enjoying the scenery.
There will be a private viewing for the family on Wednesday, February 10th from 9:00-10:00 AM at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Avenue, Ramsey. A Funeral Service for friends and family will follow at 10:00 AM. Interment at Redeemer Cemetery, Mahwah.
