With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Giuseppina (Josephine) Gatta, 93 on August 26, 2023. She was a loving and devoted soul and friend to all whose lives she touched.
Josephine was born in Villalago, Italy, and displayed immense courage when she left her family to immigrate to the United States in April 1951 as a 21-year-old newlywed. She and her husband, Lino, settled in Clifton, NJ to begin their work to achieve the American Dream.
Josephine had excellent fine motor skills. After several years working as a seamstress, she was then employed assembling coils to create electronic devices. Her attention to detail, strong work ethic, and ability to work well with others soon earned her a supervisory position.
In 1964, she and her brother, Nino, founded Data Delay Devices to supply delay line components to the electronics industry. After 24 years of working to build a successful firm, Josephine and Lino retired to enjoy time with their growing family and travel to their hometown of Villalago. Here they spent memorable summers in the cool mountain air enjoying festivals with family and friends.
Josephine counted her blessings every day. She loved America and all the opportunities the country provided for her and her family. Together they raised three children and were constantly involved with six grandchildren. She followed Italian traditions, loved to cook and bake, and looked forward to holidays and special events to share her culinary delights with her family. She was a devout parishioner of St. Andrew the Apostle R.C. Church. Above all, she had a quiet inner strength that guided her through many difficult years, an open heart, and provided support to anyone in need. Although no longer with us, she will always remain in our hearts.
Josephine is predeceased by her loving husband Lino of 50 years, her parents Giocondo and Elizabetta Lupi, and sisters Concettina Turba and Concetta Rita Lupi.
Josephine was an amazing Mother, Nonna, and Bis-Nonna. She is survived by Victoria (John) Giammarella; Frank (Estelle) Gatta; and Rita Gatta (David Weingroff); grandchildren: Joseph Giammarella (Dr. Karen Balonze); Brian (Jennifer) Giammarella; Katherine and Vincent Gatta; Christina and Steven Weingroff: and great-grandchildren Dana, Robert and Giovanni Giammarella; siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may visit at Manke Memorial at Scillieri-Arnold Funeral Home, 351 Fifth Avenue, Paterson, NJ 07514 on Thursday, August 31, 2023, between the hours of 4-8 pm.
